The Trumpet was commissioned by St George's School for Girls, Edinburgh, for their chamber choir, conductor Flo Galbraith, as part of their centenary celebrations in 1987. The partial performance given here (about 10 minutes) was recorded at the premiere in the presence of H M the Queen. The texts, anti-war poems, are by Edward Thomas (1878-1917).

Born Glasgow 1947. Educated George Watson's College and Edinburgh University MA, B.Mus, Songs, theatre music, piano and organ works, church music, music for strings. Many performances in Scotland, England, France, USA. Several BBC broadcasts on Radio 3 and Radio Scotland. Guardian Scottish music correspondent 1987-93. Editor of Centenary Album of F.G. Scott, 1980. Contributor to New Grove, Revised New Grove and Grove's Dictionary of Opera.
