The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Southgate bring together a small collection of Cressell's orchestral works. O! is based on a popular Salvation Army song with words by their founder, William Booth, O boundless salvation. Salm, the first of what became a trilogy of works involving elements of ritual (O! being the third), is based on Gaelic pslams. Speak for us, great sea starts from the idea of a calm but ever-changing and ever-moving sea in which islands appear as intrusions and gradually beging to dominate. There is a short coda echoing some of waht has gone before and disappearing into the sea of nothing from which it emerged nearly 20 minutes ago.
Performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra , conducted by William Southgate .
