How we classify the Works

Instrumentation

The more common abbreviations used for standard orchestral instruments are:

fl ob cl bsn / hn tpt trb tu / tp perc / vn va vc db

Voices are represented as:

s m-s a t bar b

or simply 'voice' where unspecified. For choral works the voices are strung together without spaces (eg satb); solo voices are followed by a space. (Thus: s satb is a work for solo soprano, and SATB choir).

Also commonly used:

pf (piano) hpd (harpsichord) gu (guitar) sax (saxophone) hp (harp) and clar (clarsach)

Category

The following keywords may help to limit your search for:

  • choral or vocal works (further qualified as accompanied, unaccompanied, sacred or secular, solo, duet, trio, quartet or ensemble )
  • orchestral (further qualified as concerto, chamber, string , jazz)
  • theatre or opera
  • chamber (further qualified as solo, duet, duo (with keyboard), trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, septet, octet, nonet, ensemble, band, group)
  • keyboard (further qualified as duet or trio where this indicates number of players rather than keyboards)
  • instrumental (used for solo works except keyboard works)
  • electroacoustic
