How we classify the Works

The more common abbreviations used for standard orchestral instruments are:

fl ob cl bsn / hn tpt trb tu / tp perc / vn va vc db

Voices are represented as:

s m-s a t bar b

or simply 'voice' where unspecified. For choral works the voices are strung together without spaces (eg satb); solo voices are followed by a space. (Thus: s satb is a work for solo soprano, and SATB choir).

Also commonly used:

pf (piano) hpd (harpsichord) gu (guitar) sax (saxophone) hp (harp) and clar (clarsach)
